Sometimes we take our water for granted. Well troubles kind of fix that mind set!

A clean glass of water. Even though our well troubles aren't fixed, we did flush the sand from our main water lines.

We live out in the country, so we have well water. (We also have GOOD water–that’s not the case everywhere, we’ve learned!)

Actually, we have 2 wells, that are both tied into the same line. That is a good thing and a bad thing.

The problem with that is, that when one well goes bad, and starts pumping sand, it goes EVERYWHERE on the whole place! In every line, in every water bowl, in every cup of water, in every washing machine, in every sprinkler head. EVERYWHERE!

Not a fun problem!

What makes it even more fun, is that rural means less population. Less population means less well drillers/fixers! Less well drillers/fixers mean that the ones that ARE out here are ridiculously busy….they have all the work they can handle and then some.

SO, it takes lots of calls, and lots of waiting, and lots of patience before they can come fix the problem!

We did finally find someone to come and look, and he diagnosed the problem. He’ll come back and fix it later.

Some well troubles are more important than others. Livestock need water, like, they NEED water, so of course, they need to be first on the list!

We have water–albeit dirty water.

Dirty Water Troubles

Left: The dirty, sandy water before we got the sand out. Right: the water after several flushes through the big hoses!

Side note: drinking water with some sand in it doesn’t hurt you–ask me how I know! 🙂 You just let it settle a bit, and drink off the top! It makes you tough! 🙂

Sand in the water DOES, however, cause a ruckus with the underground sprinkler system!! We have a large yard, and lots of sprinkler heads, and guess what? When sand gets in the sprinklers, they don’t work any more!

Either they don’t turn, or they get clogged and just dribble out a bit of water… not a good thing! I know, a first world problem!

Temporary Cure

While we wait for the well guy to come again, we thought we’d better do some fixing ourselves….. So, my man decided we’d flush the big 2 inch main water line from the working well.

All it takes is some BIG hose, some fittings, and someone who knows how to work all that stuff. You’re right, it wasn’t me…..or Breeze. We’re just the helpers!

Breeze wanting to play in the water as we flush the sand out of our 2 inch line because of our well troubles.

Breeze wanted to play in the sprinklers, but she learned that there are sprinklers…and then, there are SPRINKLERS!! 🙂 🙂

Trying to flush out the line in the basement of the house took a lot of hose, but it seemed like it worked! And we didn’t have any catastrophes either!! And that is a PLUS!

I DO NOT like water in the basement, no matter how un-classy my basement is!! Ask me how I know!

Two inch line makes quite a gush of water! It takes LOTS of water to lift the sand that has settled to the bottom of the lines, and shoot it out onto the grass. Hopefully we got most of it!

It took us all morning, and flushing 3 -2 inch hydrants, but we now have clean water to drink! For the time being, anyway. YAY!

The moral of the story is that we should never take our clean running water for granted! Sometimes a little reminder doesn’t hurt….but it sure is inconvenient!

Thanks for stopping by,

  1. I so agree. Nothing worse than water problems no matter where you live. And water in the basement is the worst. Hope you get it all fixed soon!
