I have good news and bad news on the chickie front. It seems just an even keel would be nice, but, apparently that’s not to be had…
Beatrice-Recovered Chickie!
The good news, is that poor ol’ Beatrice, is doing AMAZINGLY well! If you’re new here, Beatrice was attacked in the coop one night by one of my “darling” chickens. Read here about her calamity!

She runs around just like a normal chicken, in with the others now! She is still low-man-on-the-totem-pole, but they aren’t brutal to her anymore! I still haven’t found the culprit that viciously attacked her–in the safety of her own coop, mind you–but her scalp is growing back, and I think she’s going to recover fully!!
Bad Chickie News: Pierre Is Missing!
The BAD news is that not one, but TWO of my chickens disappeared in broad daylight the other day!! Just minding their own business, roaming around the farm like they usually do! BROAD DAYLIGHT!
I would be very disappointed, but not surprised, to find a chicken or two missing if I had forgotten to close them in their coop overnight. But during the day is quite another story! We’ve rarely had a chicken get taken during the day before, except maybe once or twice when a neighbor dog came visiting. Luckily that’s not often!
Was it a fox? An owl? A coyote? No one knows….there were no clues, not even a feather!
So, now they have to be penned up in their run for a while, which of course doesn’t make us happy!! I’m paranoid that they all will disappear one by one!
Chickens disappearing in itself is bad enough, but one of them was my teenager Partridge Chantecler, Pierre! I had gotten two of this new-to-me breed, Pierre and Agatha, and I had been looking forward to learning more, and maybe even getting chicks from this pair…..but no….plans have changed! 🙁
Agatha — Hen or Rooster?
The longer they grew, and the more they changed, it was becoming obvious that Pierre was actually a she….and (I think) Agatha, Pierre’s “sister” may or may not be a rooster!! Interesting problem to have, right!?
This breed seems to be VERY slow at maturing, so they are still giving me a run for my money at figuring out who’s what!! And much to my dismay, I don’t get to find out what Pierre really was!

The thing is, I’ve been raising chickens for a long time….I should KNOW, right?! Maybe I’m losing my “chicken smarts”? Maybe it’s because I was comparing their maturity rate to the Barred Rocks, who mature VERY fast….
It’s just that “she” changes every week! The tail feathers keep getting more and more colorful and flowy and she kind of spars with Samuel. SO…. I’ve just never had to wait this long to know! So far, there has been no crowing out of Agatha yet…and we have another month or two before they normally start laying eggs…..
You know the saying…..”patience is a virtue…..”!
Well, thanks for coming and listening to my chickie dilemma’s! I guess I’ll gather virtue and keep waiting….since that’s all I can do! 🙂
